second biggest jackpot ever. abc's john muller joins us live in new york city with the story. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. there is my ticket to a dream. we all have another chance at this. take a look at that magic number in red, $425 million. no lines here on the upper west side. i suspect there's no lines across america right now. be an early bird, get your ticket, because as the frenzy builds and the wednesday night jackpot approaches, that line is expected to climb and the lines should climb with them. a mad dash saturday night for the last-minute chance to win $325 million, the thanksgiving weekend payout to be truly thankful for. >> who knows, you know. somebody's got to win. >> reporter: but those six numbers proved to be more elusive than a mall parking spot on black friday. the bright side, the unwon powerball jackpot now swells to an estimated $425 million. the largest jackpot in powerball history. enough dough to buy 2,000 ferraris or the entire country of anguillas twice.

>> that kind of money. i'd have a heart attack. >> reporter: it also surpasses the previous powerball record of $365 million. that windfall claimed by eight co-workers in lincoln, nebraska, back in 2006. the odds of winning your $425 million, still about 1 in 175 million, or to put it another way, that's about 25 times less likely than you winning an academy award. even slimmer than your chances of being seriously injured by your own toilet. but don't let the odds flush your dreams away. somebody has to win it, and as they say, you got to be in it to win it. once again, the jackpot drawing is wednesday night. it could go even higher than $425 million. and in case you're wondering what that lump sum payout would be if you take it all in one lump shot, a measly $278 million. not too shabby. >> not shabby at all. 2,000 ferraris. >> yes. the stat that really struck me is at least it's reassuring to know our toilets are safe.

>> yes, we have safe toilets in this country. >> thank you, john muller, for that. all right, this weekend's marathon holiday shopping bonanza rolls on this morning. it's been mayhem since thanksgiving night. tomorrow it's back to work monday and cyber monday, as well. >> and sandwiched in the middle a relatively new special and somewhat sentimental shopping day, small business saturday. aimed at giving the little guy a lift. abc's john schriffen has the bargain beat for days and has the latest on that. hey, john, good morning. >> reporter: dan, bianna, good morning. if you have never heard of small business saturday it's only been around for three years, but it's starting to catch on. american express said last year, more than 100 million people participated in the shopping holiday. now, it's aimed at being the opposite of those wi wild scenes that we saw the day before on black friday. so what was this pushing and shoving about? new numbers out this morning show thanksgiving day shopping took a big bite out of black friday. consumers spent just over $11 billion friday. but that's down almost 2% from last year, and online sales rose

more than 17% on thanksgiving. more than 20% on friday. >> people are going to get hurt! >> reporter: and on small business saturday, a day to support your local mom and pop store, shoppers found a way to avoid the crush at the mall. >> we have a 3-year-old, and this is one-stop shopping. we got everything we need all at once. they're wrapping our gifts right now. >> reporter: and you missed the crowds? >> no crowds. i mean, no crowds. >> reporter: west side kids, a local toy store in manhattan, has been in business for more than 30 years, giving children a safe place to play -- >> how do you do that. >> reporter: -- and learn. >> well, this is like where you can build lots of electronic things. >> reporter: in memphis, anna avant says her customers prefer this intimate setting to the door-busting deals at the bigger stores. >> they know whatever the small

businesses make goes back to the community faster than, say, a big box store. >> reporter: even president obama took his daughters to a local bookstore in northern virginia. >> happy thanksgiving, folks. >> reporter: or not. there's a darker side to this black friday weekend, thanksgiving time thieves. in dallas, a u.p.s. driver drops off a package. 11 minutes later. >> i saw a car pull up, it kind of passed the house, a lady got out, walked right to it, picked it up and got in the car and left. >> reporter: and he's not just mad at the thief, he's angry at the u.p.s. driver for not knocking on his door because they were home. but as more people install home surveillance system, grinches who steal anything they can should smile because they may be caught on camera. so, what was inside that package? the family said that it was $1,500 computer. and what made them even more suspicious, according to the u.p.s. tracking receipt, the driver claims he met with a male customer that day. but obviously they say no one

we appreciate it, becky. take your bow. as i said, a lot of other news developing overnight. let's turn to alex perez in for ron claiborne on if thun morning. >> good morning, dan. good morning, bianna. good morning, everyone. we begin with a tragic fire overseas, at least 112 people were killed in the fire at a garment factory in bangladesh, workers who made it to the roof were saved. but the building has no emergency exits. bangladesh exports most of its garments to the u.s. and europe. three maintenance workers were seriously injured after a fire broke out at the state department in washington. it started during routine maintenance. the building was briefly evacuated and then reopened. some victims of superstorm sandy are being victimized once again. thieves looted at least three homes in the breezy point neighborhood over the thanksgiving weekend. burglaries have skyrocketed in the area which is among the hardest hit by the storm. an 80-foot yacht went up in flames off the coast of miami beach saturday. three people jumped into the water aboard the boat and were rescued by the coast guard. the yacht was partially submerged and will be towed to

submerged after the fire was put out and will be towed to shore. no one was injured. an oregon man is lucky to be alive after crashing his pickup through a guard yale and dangling from a bridge. the wheels of the truck caught the rail keeping it from falling to the ground. they picked it up after an hour. he was arrested for dui. finally this morning, notre dame has a chance to be national champions again, the fighting irish beat rival usc last night, capping off their first perfect regular season since 1988 and earning a title shot in january. it would be the storied program first national title in 24 years. and, dan and bianna, most of the guys on the team aren't even 24 years old. so they're beyond excited right now. >> they are thrilled. >> regis philbin is excited, as well. he's a super fan. >> a little older than 24. >> still excited, nonetheless. >> thanks, alex. >> alex, thanks. well, congress gets back to business tomorrow after its week-long thanksgiving holiday. and at the top of its agenda resuming talks with president obama about keeping the country

from plunging off the fiscal cliff into economic disaster. >> so let's bring in the host of abc's "this week" george stephanopoulos. good morning, sir. congress has gone home to the districts. is there any optimism that cooler heads will prevail and we'll see movement toward a deal quickly? >> there actually is. there are only five weeks left. everything has to happen before december 31st or everybody's taxes go up, and the spending cuts kick in. but the president has had his first meeting with the top congressional leaders. there's a fair amount of optimism that something will get done before the end of the year. not necessarily the whole big deal but maybe a down payment on deficit reduction combined with a commitment to hit the big numbers before the end of next year. >> in addition to the fiscal cliff, there's some big vak kis coming up in the president's cabinet, as well. we have the state department, we have treasury. those two we expected, even the cia now, the general petraeus scandal, three vacancies. >> three big ones at least and

there's likely to be more shuffling. of course, the big controversy right now over who is going to replace hillary clinton at the state department. the president has signaled is favorite to be ambassador susan rice and faced opposition in the senate and house. this week, 97 house republicans signed a letter telling the president don't appoint susan rice. she came out this week and defended herself and the president indicated he would like to pick her although he said he didn't make a final decision. i believe if he went for it despite the controversy over what happened in benghazi he would get her through. the leading candidate for treasury is probably the white house chief of staff jack lew. although that might not be announced until after the fiscal cliff negotiations. mike morales the acting director has left. he is a strong favorite to remain there although the president's counterterrorism adviser john brennan a big candidate. >> just a slightly less serious note, apparently there's going

to be some head shaving on the broadcast this week. >> a first on "this week." this is right. a great story, the top spokesman who had a bet, shawn spicer and brad woodhouse. whoever lost the election would shave their head. so this was shawn spicer was supposed to shave his head. he is the rnc spokesman and when brad found out about this, we're showing it, jon karl is doing the honors. he said he would join in and shave his head. >> he has no credentials for this. >> let's see how he does. the thing is it's for a good cause, st. baldrick's center. >> anyway, you'll be joining that helps kids with cancer so end up both shaving their heads on the show today to help kids with cancer. >> anyway, you'll be joining them? >> i'll help out the cause. >> all right, great to see you. george has a big show. actor/director ben affleck will be here and senator s dick durbin and lindsey graham with george stephanopoulos.

extreme couponing gone wrong. check this out. an expert coupon artist involved in a violent confrontation on a discount store who refused to honor her coupons all on tape. mark greenblatt is on the story. mark, good morning. >> and good morning to you. you have seen those pictures, frenzy shoppers attacking each other for those deals. this morning, we got the video of a store manager at a dollar tree physically going after a customer for apparently bringing in too many coupons. you probably heard of extreme couponing by now, thanks to the learning channel show. >> this is "extreme couponing." >> reporter: it's the hobby that's supposed to pay you back in green, not in black eyes, like what happened to this hard-core couponer at the dollar tree in germantown, tennessee. >> as you can see i have broken blood vessels. >> reporter: but her attacker's not a fellow customer, rather, they say, it's the store manager herself. melissa monzo-mart and jennifer

hill apparently brought too many coupons to handle. >> we were told that we were harassing her to use those coupons. and she threatened to call the cops. >> reporter: and that's when they say they recorded the manager getting sassy. >> can i get the rest of the advil? >> no, you cannot. >> so there's no reason that i can't buy more than four items. >> i guess you better make like water and get running. >> reporter: jennifer left first and watched as melissa collected her coupons. but when melissa tried to hit the exit, she says instead she got hit in the face. >> with her fist balled up, that's where she hit me in the eye and in the face. >> reporter: local police reportedly charged the manager with misdemeanor assault. the women say they never thought they'd come to blows for clipping coupons. >> trying to save some money for our family and people we help. we donate everywhere and look what happened. >> dollar tree told abc news it's obviously concerned about this incident, which says is under investigation. when we called yesterday, that store manager was not on duty to speak with us.

dan and bianna, no word they'll be back on duty to accept anyone else's coupons. >> some incredible video. >> incredible stuff. >> thank you. time now for a check of the weather and over to ginger zee. hey, ginger. >> hey there, guys. get this, it's even colder in parts of the southeast than it is in the northeast and new england. let me show you the numbers here. waking up this morning, new orleans 41. you see all this pink, that would be freeze warnings. this is actually a problem for places that are growing things. birmingham is 29. savannah, 33. raleigh, a chilly 24. let's compare those numbers to what we see up north, we've got 30 for grand rapids, michigan. my hometown. buffalo this morning is at 31. new york city is right at 34. boston at the freezing mark. so it's almost like a third of the nation is at the same temperature. upper 20s and low 30s. certainly feels a lot more like winter after a lot of those record-breaking high type of days. you get the cold passing over the relatively warmer water of the lakes. and that's why you have more in traverse city, lake-effect snow. some more too for buffalo and syracuse.

part of the system had a little snow. pittsburgh had some accidents but that has all passed. now it's just going to be focused in on lake effect. we have another system to talk about that could bring rain changing over to snow. watch this thing. it's a low pressure system develops off the coast, it will shove moisture up toward the coast and that's why i think an icy mix on tuesday for the big places like new york city, close to d.c., they'll be close to it there, north and west of the city, once you get into the higher elevations, it will be snow. so we'll be watching out for that. and if you want to stay warm and toasty, you have to go to the southwest. a little bit of coastal fog but

picture that the ending was happy. the boy was rescued by firefighters and also by his quick-thinking father who punched a hole in the wall. and alex is back with this story. >> hey, guy, wait till you see this. a lot to be thankful at the leger household this thanksgiving. the day was beginning when their 2-year-old suddenly disappeared and then the screams began coming out of the wall. >> this is where he crawled into. you never would think a child would fit down there. >> reporter: 2-year-old cayden leger didn't just fit, he fell nearly 20 feet down this old laundry chute inside his new hampshire home on thanksgiving morning. >> i was laying in bed and all of a sudden, there was just this thump and blood-curling screams coming from somewhere in the house. >> reporter: somewhere turned out to be behind this wall. >> and i punched the wall, so that i could at least hold his hand and comfort him until the fire department got here. >> reporter: his dad fractured his wrist, thankfully the only minor injury of the incident.

>> there was a cable when he fell and there was a bunch of cables all wrapped into one and it barrickly caught him between the legs like a harness and cradled his fall. kind of cushioned it. >> if that wasn't there, it could have been way worse. >> reporter: firefighters arrived and quickly broke down the wall, rescuing cayden. the tough little toddler was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. >> he was fine all except for a couple scratches. >> reporter: the chute has already been screwed shut to avoid another accident. >> he's your typical boy times a million. >> he's curious about everything and anything. >> reporter: and by thursday afternoon, curious cayden was already back on his feet lifting crates and getting into mischief. >> it was a crazy, crazy, untraditional thanksgiving. i think i'll go traditional next year. >> reporter: yeah, a simple dinner at the table would work, she says. believe it or not, that chute was only 7x10 inches big, so

he was in a coma for almost a month. doctors said his odds of making it were slim. but on thanksgiving day, a huge surprise. and bazi kanani is here with the story. >> good morning. such a sweet story. just one month ago the pessah family in burlingame, california, thought they would be grieving on this holiday weekend. but instead, they received the one gift that they had been praying for. what they would have missed most was his smile. the one benjamin pessah wore while celebrating halloween with friends in san francisco before his parents got a startling phone call from police. >> your son benjamin got shot and he's in the hospital. >> reporter: as the 21-year-old was walking home from a party with his girlfriend and two others, a gunman confronted them for no apparent reason. when benjamin stepped forward to protect his girlfriend, the man started shooting. the last bullet fired hit benjamin's head. doctors gave him only a 25% chance of surviving and even

then, made no promises about the condition he would have to live in. benjamin spent one month in a medically induced coma until last sunday when doctors revived him to see how he could do. >> i went in there and i told him, could you say, hi, mom, and he said, "hi, mom." and that brought me to tears. >> reporter: benjamin was talking, and soon while other families were sitting down to thanksgiving dinner, he was standing, taking his first steps. >> he made it. he's strong. >> he's a miracle. >> it's pretty rare. he's a pretty good fighter, i think. >> reporter: the pessah family never expected to be spending this holiday weekend at the hospital, but they are grateful to be here talking, even joking, with the son they almost lost. >> well, we sold your truck. >> reporter: benjamin's smile is back. >> are you ready to come home soon, ben? >> reporter: and that gives them hope.
